Paver patio installation
Turn a patch of thirsty lawn or a cramped concrete slab into a patio that's comfortable from May through October.
A paver patio is a surface of individual concrete or stone units set over a compacted gravel base, with sand in the joints and a solid edge holding everything in place. In the Tri-Cities, where the ground freezes in winter and bakes in summer, that flexible construction is a big reason people choose pavers over another poured slab.
What are the common patio options?
| Option | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete pavers | Most backyard patios | Wide range of shapes and colors; easy to replace a single unit |
| Natural stone | Upscale patios, steps and accents | Varies more in thickness; usually costs more |
| Extending an old slab | Yards with a small builder's patio | Pavers can wrap or border the slab, or the slab can be removed |
| Permeable pavers | Spots where water collects | Wider joints filled with stone let water soak in; needs a different base design |
How is a patio built?
- Layout and locates. The area is marked out and utilities are located through 811.
- Excavation. Sod and soft topsoil come out so the base sits on firm ground.
- Base. Crushed gravel goes in and is compacted in layers, with a slight slope away from the house.
- Bedding and pavers. A thin, level bedding layer is screeded and the pavers are laid in the chosen pattern.
- Edges and joints. An edge restraint locks the perimeter, joint sand is swept in, and the surface is compacted.
What works in Tri-Cities summers?
Light and mid-tone pavers stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark ones on a 95-degree afternoon. Many homeowners pair a patio with a pergola, shade sail or covered section, and plan it on the east or north side of the house where afternoon sun is gentler. Ask the contractor about sprinkler heads near the patio, since overspray from hard water can leave white stains on pavers.
What affects the price?
- Square footage and shape
- Paver type, pattern and borders
- Removing sod, an old slab or rock
- Access for equipment into the backyard
- Steps, walls, lighting or a fire pit added on
The contractor prices the job after seeing the site, measuring the area and talking through the pattern and materials you want. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Can pavers go over my existing concrete patio?
Sometimes, with thin pavers set over a sound, well-sloped slab. A cracked or settling slab is usually removed first. The contractor can tell you which applies.
When is the best time to build a patio in the Tri-Cities?
Spring and fall are the most comfortable, but pavers can go in through summer. Frozen ground in winter can delay excavation and compaction.
